History
|
Introduced in 1912, the Broadway Limited offered superb luxury and service between Chicago and the heart of New York City. Flagship of the Pennsylvania Railroad's passenger service, it quickly developed a fierce and loyal following.
Always accorded the finest, the train was streamlined in 1938, and refitted in 1949. Just 10 years later, the Broadway became America's last all-Pullman streamliner following archrival New York Central's merger of the 20th Century Limited with the combined Pacemaker/Commodore Vanderbilt. Pennsy continued the grand traditions of the Broadway and there was a brief increase in revenue. But as the Pennsylvania faced mounting financial problems, even its best train was expendable, and the Broadway made its last run on December 13, 1967. The train soldiered on briefly for Penn Central until 1971 when Amtrak took over, running its own version of the Broadway through September 1995.

The Broadway's 50th birthday was a bright spot for Pennsy despite declining ridership and revenues. Big changes were on the horizon that would soon impact Pennsy's flagship streamliner. - Courtesy Chuck Sabatino & Ron Ervin Collection. |

Here's an exterior side view of Walthers pre-production sample P-S "Creek" Series 12 Duplex 4 Bedroom Sleeper. Here you can see the 12 small windows for the duplex rooms as well as the much larger windows of the 4 bedrooms.

This is the opposite side view of the exterior which shows the aisle window configuration.

This is a side view of the interior of the P-S "Creek" Series 12 Duplex 4 Bedroom Sleeper. You can see the unique bi-level stacking approach that fit multiple rooms in limited space. The entire interior of the car is faithfully recreated in this model.
|
Though it's tough to show in photography, this photo focuses in on the car's aisle. On the inset we're showing the ramp to the lower floor that makes the room entrances on this unique car possible. The floor of the car in the prototype and the model sits lower than on a traditional Pullman-Standard streamliner. Though it's hard to see in our pre-production model, you can also get a look at the doors to the sleeping compartments and the steps leading to the upper level compartments.

This is another photo from a top-down angle that displays the seating/sleeping and sink/toilet configurations in each compartment.
