In Service: 1946 - early 80s, several preserved examples.
Primary Assignment: Road freight and passenger service.
Introduced in 1946, the F3 was the perfect diesel for railroads ready to replace aging steam power. Packing 1500 horsepower, F3s could be set up in combinations of A and B units (some roads opted for A-A sets) for freight or passenger service, where they performed equally well. Replaced by the more powerful F7 in February 1949, F3s remained in service into the 1980s, when their advancing age made them prime candidates for trade-ins on newer, more powerful hood units.
