Introduced in 1989, the PROTO 2000 Series introduced a new generation of HO Scale plastic locos combining the finest levels of prototype detail and performance. The series now includes N and HO Scale models of many popular diesels and HO Scale freight cars in both kit and assembled versions.

With over 10 years of hands-on model building experience, the Proto family expanded in 1998 with the unveiling of the PROTO 1000 Series in HO Scale. This collection of models combines advanced features with more rugged detailing, making them ideal for modelers of any age and skill level. This series has continued to grow and now includes freight cars as well as some very unique diesels and subway cars.

As interest in steam power grew, the PROTO 2000 Heritage Steam Collection debuted in 1999. Based on a wide range of American locos, this line features exceptional detailing for maximum realism, and includes both HO and N Scale replicas.

The entire PROTO series of models, formerly offered by Life-Like, were acquired by Walthers in the summer of 2005.
