The Basic Rectangle

To provide plenty of open floor space for machinery, many brick factories were designed and built as large rectangles. The simple lines make this an ideal design for your first project, and the finished model will look great in any older industrial area on your layout.

Here, we used Large Walls for the sides. The ends are made with various pieces from the Small Walls set. We also added Foundations and a Loading Dock to change the look and feel of the building — and it’s ready to load products for shipment by road or rail!

An Expanded “L”

Another good starter project, the extra wall sections on one side produce a structure with a different look from a basic rectangle, and it can easily be added to any design.

The “L” was built by stacking Small Walls to create the front and rear, then attached to the walls of the main building by aligning the inside edges at a 90° angle and gluing from the rear. Our model uses a pair of Large Walls along the outside; we also used some leftover single windows and brick inserts to change its appearance. Since wall sections are interchangeable (one Large Wall is the same width as two Small Walls joined with a Pilaster), there are many additional detailing possibilities for this outside wall that would result in a completely different look.

Bigger Buildings

With multiple stories and a unique shape, a building like this will draw a lot of attention in any industrial area. Combining flat and angled roofs, along with various details, implies that the larger buildings were once separate structures that were connected at a later date as business boomed. These kinds of renovations and additions were common, and adding an extension to an existing structure will produce a dramatically different building.

One major change that’s easy to do is to paint the parts in different colors as we did here. While all Cornerstone Modulars are molded in color, they’re separate parts so you can easily paint them in any color for a custom look.

Partial Buildings for Backdrops

The flexible design and great detail of Cornerstone Modulars makes it easy to build realistic partial buildings or flats of various sizes and shapes to fit your needs.

Here, the front wall was built using various wall sections, doors and canopies. Look closely and you can see the Small Bases (two were glued end to-end) that support the building. Our design uses Small Walls for the ends. For this particular structure, a Peaked Roof and an end Cornice were cut in half to complete the model. In a very tight space, you could simply use Corner Pilasters for the end walls and small strip of styrene for the roof.
