| New Octagonal Tower Serves Busy Grade Crossings Milwaukee, Wis. - Walthers announces the addition of Gateman's Tower to its Cornerstone Series® kit line. This new model comes in HO and N Scales and is scheduled for delivery in October 2007.
These eight-sided towers were a fixture along the Milwaukee Road and similar designs were used by other railroads. The ground level housed mechanicals including a stove for heat. Upstairs were the controls - a lever to manually operate the air pump, separate valves for each gate and a maze of pipes. Windows on all sides gave the gateman 360 degree views. Pneumatically operated gates date from around 1900 and buildings like this remained in use
until the early 1960s.
Based on a Milwaukee Road prototype, this easy-to-build kit features an outside staircase, an exterior coal box and a separate storage shed. Parts for two complete towers, illustrated instructions and realistic decals are included in each package. The Gateman's Tower kits are available in HO Scale (#933-2944) retailing at $32.98 and N Scale (#933-3811) at $23.98 each.
