| More Schemes for Popular Walthers Metal-Plated Amtrak® Superliner® Cars To complete the upgraded Amtrak Superliner car series with a metal-plated finish, Walthers will be releasing the Phase IV scheme for Superliner I and II cars and Phases II and III for Superliner I models. In addition, Superliner I Coach-Baggage and Superliner II Transition-Sleeper cars will be available in Phase IVb striping for the first time.
Fast Facts: Entering service in 1979, Amtrak's bi-level Superliner cars were an all-new design (built by Pullman-Standard) based on a common car body that could be outfitted as a coach-baggage car for short-distance runs, a long-distance coach with larger seats, a sleeper or a diner. In all, 284 eventually made up the first fleet, which were used on western long-distance runs. At the time, clearance problems in many eastern states prevented running these taller cars on several routes. With the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1992, a second series of cars, designated Superliner II, was constructed by Bombardier to meet new standards for easier access.
Features: One of the signature features of the prototypes is the stainless steel construction that gives them a unique appearance. To capture the look for its models, Walthers applies a plated metal finish to the highly detailed plastic bodies. This is complemented with authentic graphics, with car names and numbers provided as decals so modelers can easily build a fleet. Walthers has added full interiors to the upper and lower levels, which can be seen through the tinted windows.
Built-in electrical contacts allow easy installation of the Superliner Interior Lighting Kit for DC or DCC (sold separately).
Notable details include 16 formed wire grab irons and handrails, all of which are factory installed. The cars also feature correct trucks with metal sideframes and RP-25 wheels. Superliner I models ride on later spring suspension style trucks (as converted from the original airbag trucks), while Superliner II cars ride on GSC style trucks. Both truck styles are available separately. Due to the prototypical length and underbody detail, a minimum radius of 24" is recommended.
