North American Ethanol Corn Storage Silos & Elevators Now Available
Walthers announces the arrival of the Cornerstone® Corn Storage Silos & Elevators. This North American Ethanol series structure is based on storage silos found at many ethanol plants across the continent.
Fast Facts: The production of ethanol, a type of alcohol used in motor fuel blends, is big business. Its use in gasoline blends reduces gas emissions and lessens dependence on foreign oil. Corn is the main feedstock and thousands of carloads are moved each week to production plants across the continent. Ethanol plants produce two main products: ethanol that is shipped in tank cars, and distillers dried grains (DDG), a byproduct used in animal feed. Storage silos are where corn is stockpiled within the plant. An elevator, along with underground augers, moves corn from the unloading shed into the silos. A second elevator moves the corn from the silo into the processing center where it's milled for making ethanol. Most plants keep about a 10-day supply of corn on hand to ensure an uninterrupted supply for processing.
Features: The Corn Storage Silos & Elevators kit includes two concrete silos, a long elevator leg for incoming corn and a short elevator leg for the processing end, plus a conveyor bridge for use between the short elevator leg and the Processing Center kit (#933-2976, available separately). The silos, based on a common design used at many ethanol plants, feature a connecting hammermill between them and rooftop handrails. It's similar to grain silos found at many grain handling facilities and is an ideal starting point for modelers who wish to use it as a trackside grain silo. Kit parts are made of injection-molded plastic and come molded in appropriate colors. Decals signs are also included.
