Walthers announces its all-new DM&IR Wood Caboose, a replica of cars operated on iron ore trains from the 1920 to the 1960s.
Fast Facts: Northern Minnesota iron ore railroad Duluth Missabe & Iron Range (DM&IR) is best known for its huge Yellowstone 2-8-8-4 steam locomotives and, in the modern era, seemingly endless trains of ore cars hauled by classy maroon diesels. The railroad's predecessors Duluth & Iron Range (D&IR) and Duluth, Missabe & Northern (DM&N) fell under common control by U.S. Steel in 1901 but remained separate entities until merged in 1938. A number of wooden cabooses were rebuilt from 1890s-built ACF and Duluth Manufacturing Co. four-wheel cars. Similar cars were constructed new by D&IR circa 1924. The cars incorporated a steel underframe to better withstand demanding service trailing long, heavy iron ore trains. With the merger the cars became part of the DM&IR fleet until replaced by all-steel cars. A few remained on the roster into the 1960s. Several were sold off to the Chicago Great Western and similar cars were operated by several other lines.
