Fast Facts: By the late 1940s, America's railroads were rapidly upgrading and expanding their streamliner fleets. Besides adding new cars, many also began to provide new services and accommodations. When Pullman-Standard's spacious 12 Double Bedroom Sleepers hit the tracks, passengers rode the rails in comfort. Some of these cars were still running when Amtrak took over passenger service in 1971.
