Broadway Limited

Broadway Limited is next Walthers Name Train

Walthers is pleased to announce its next HO Scale name train, the world-famous Broadway Limited. Based on Broadway equipment in service from 1953 to 1968, the train includes nine all-new cars, many of which were also used on other Pennsylvania streamliners. First Edition models include a special certificate of authenticity and an in-depth history. Deliveries begin in January 2011* with the Inn Series 21-Roomette Sleeper, and continue into September. For the finishing touch, matching PROTO 2000® EMD E8A and E7B models will be available separately.

Fast Facts: Thundering over the great “broad way” between New York and Chicago, no finer train served the Pennsylvania than the Broadway Limited. Its exclusive clientele demanded — and received — the very best, from equipment to impeccable service.

Flagship of Pennsylvania’s Blue Ribbon fleet of streamliners, the Broadway was updated with new lightweight cars in 1949, offering a wider range of sleeping accommodations and improving some services. Many were used on other Pennsylvania trains as well. Signature cars built especially for the Broadway included the View series observation lounges and Harbor series bedroom-lounge cars. Traditional accommodations were offered in 10-6 and 4-4-2 sleepers, while modern Roomette sleepers for the budget-conscious or business traveler, and duplex Sleepers with both single and double bedrooms, were new to the train. Other changes included a new 68-seat dining car paired with a kitchen-dormitory designed to speed service and lower costs. Typical of fast, important trains, the Broadway carried a full Railway Post Office, and the railroad assigned one of its rebuilt heavyweight baggage-mail BM70m cars to the job.

At this time, the Broadway also provided through sleeper service between New York and Los Angeles, so passengers did not need to change trains in Chicago. Through 1954, a Pennsylvania Imperial sleeper (painted two-tone gray to better match Santa Fe equipment) was used. From 1954 to 1957, a Santa Fe Regal series 4-4-2 sleeper (coming in April 2011 from Walthers as #932-9729) was assigned.

Despite its grace and style, the Broadway was no match for airlines, automobiles and the downward spiral of the Pennsylvania itself. Formally discontinued as an all-Pullman Train on December 13, 1967. With coaches and other cars added to the consist, it soldiered on briefly for Penn Central. Amtrak ran a revised and refitted Broadway through September 1995. Some of the original 1949 Broadway cars are now privately owned.
