Fast Facts: America’s last great passenger station, the Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal (LAUPT) opened in May 1939. LAUPT hosted some of the best-known trains in the U. S. including the Santa Fe Super Chief, Union Pacific City streamliners and Southern Pacific’s Daylight. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1980, the impressive Mission-style station underwent a major renovation in the 1990s. Today, as the Los Angeles Union Station, the facility is the major downtown hub for Metrolink and Metro Rail commuter trains.Long-distance Amtrak trains still call and the station is slated to play a vital role in California High Speed Rail.
