Walthers is pleased to announce HO and N Scale versions of the Southern Iron & Equipment Co. (SIECO) Pulpwood Flat Cars. Based on equipment in service since the 1960s, the cars feature new roadnames and numbers.
Fast Facts: One of the key raw materials in making paper, pulpwood has been hauled by train for many years. Over time, specialized equipment was developed to simplify unloading and hold the load securely in transit, including a new series of purpose-built flat cars built by the Southern Iron & Equipment Co. (SIECO) in the 1960s. This design featured a V-shaped sloping floor that moved the center of gravity to the middle of the car, making it harder for logs to shift from side to side, while bulkhead ends reduced load shifting forward or backward. And with an open center, the cars could be loaded and unloaded rapidly. Today, they're still moving pulpwood from cutting areas to paper mills in many parts of the country.
