Super Chief

Super Chief Shines in Walthers Fall Releases

Walthers is pleased to announce a new version of HO Scale Super Chief with a real metal finish to simulate the stainless steel of the prototypes. All cars come fully assembled and feature factory-installed grab irons, as well as prototypically tinted windows. In response to numerous requests from Santa Fe fans and collectors, an all-new replica of the Pullman-Standard Regal series 4-4-2 sleepers will also be offered. The first release, the Pine series 10-6 Sleeper (#932-9721), will arrive in October. Matching PROTO 2000® engines, based on Santa Fe's 16 Class late F3 diesels, will also be available separately.

Fast Facts: Introduced as an even more luxurious version of Santa Fe’s premiere Chief in 1937, the Super Chief came to define American streamliners. Racing between Chicago and Los Angeles in just under 40 hours — the fastest schedule at the time — the new diesel-powered train established an unequalled reputation for speed, courtesy and luxury. It quickly became the favorite of the rich and powerful, including the elite of Hollywood and Broadway, whether traveling for business or pleasure. As service expanded, the entire consist was modernized several times. In 1946, Class 16 F3 AB-B-A locos were delivered that would become the signature diesel of the postwar passenger fleet, resplendent in Warbonnet red, silver and yellow. And by the mid-1950s (the era depicted by Walthers model), stainless steel cars from Budd, Pullman-Standard and American Car & Foundry were regularly assigned to the train.

PROTO 2000® ATSF Class 16 Late F3 Diesels

Fast Facts: Based on the success of its wartime FTs, Santa Fe upgraded its postwar passengerfleet with EMD F3s in late 1946. As the first A-B-B-A sets were numbered 16 LABC (L designated a lead unit), the F3s became the 16 Class. Over the next three years, two additional orders dieselized the road’s important trains. During production, the appearance changed as lower fans and other changes were made by EMD, as well as by the Santa Fe when units were shopped. The last group #30LABC through #36LABC, were delivered in 1949 with louvered side panels, short fans and stainless steel grilles over the air intakes. Many soldiered on into the 1970s, some ending their careers in freight service, while a few were rebuilt as CF7 road switchers.

Features:

Walthers all-new Santa Fe 16 Class F3s are based on units from the third order. Like the prototypes, they feature louvered side panels and short fans along with the correct flush-mounted dynamic brake grids found on F3s. A units include a revised Leslie 5-chime air horn and “can” style radio antenna; all models feature a real metal finish, “stainless” air grilles and inertial air filter details. A-B sets and matching A units with various numbers will be offered in Sound and DCC, or Standard DC powered versions. Other features include:

• 14:1 Gear Ratio for Easy Multiple-Unit Operations
• Helical Gears for Ultra-Quiet & Smooth Running
• Superb Paint & Lettering
• Factory-Installed Metal Grab Irons, Handrails & Lift Rings
• Five-Pole, Skew-Wound, High-Torque, High-Efficiency Can Motor
• Proto MAX™ Metal Knuckle Couplers
