Modernized C30-1 Caboose - Kit (Lasercut wood)
Southern Pacific
Walthers Part # 152-876, p. 189 Walthers 2012 HO Scale Reference
HO scale, $49.95, currently in stock at Walthers
Serving as the Southern Pacific's standard caboose for decades, over 240
C-30-1 cars were built for SP, with an additional 100 for the Texas & New
Orleans between 1917 and 1928. While individual variations existed over
time, many were modernized in later years, receiving a full width cupola
with either straight or slant sides, as well as steel underframes, power
hand brakes and other upgrades.
This kit depicts a typical later rebuild with full-width, straight-sided
cupola, and is based on car #196 as it appeared in 1961.
In addition to the laser-cut body, the kit includes the common features
found on many cars, including steel channel end beams and power brake wheel
stands. Parts are included for plain cupola end windows, as well as your
choice of two different styles of crash bar glazed end windows. Other
details include a laser-cut underframe, end platforms, ladders, end
railing, and brake wheels, cast resin platform steps, white metal SP style
smokejack, and fully illustrated instructions with information on painting
and decaling the assembled model. Several fixtures are also provided to
simplify making prototypical handholds and ladders.
Some additional items suggested to complete the model are sold separately,
including Microscale decal set #460-87227, Tichy #293-3051 Bettendorf
Trucks, and Kadee #380-5 couplers with draft gear boxes.
