PROTO 2000 Alco RS-27s Bring a Distinctive Prototype to HO Scale
As the horsepower race between major locomotive builders began heating up,
ALCO rolled out its new RS-27 in late 1959. While the design used the
running gear of the RS-11, the new model was powered by a larger
16-cylinder prime mover that generated 2400 horsepower. To accommodate its
extra length, the cab was moved forward, and the front hood shortened,
giving the RS-27s a very distinctive appearance. Under relentless pressure
from GE and EMD, ALCO was able to sell just 35 RS-27s before production
ended in 1962.
ALCO's last road switchers have long been a favorite with modelers. The
PROTO 2000 models mark the first time these distinctive diesels have been
offered in plastic. Notable features include:
* Heavy Diecast Chassis
* 5 Pole Skew Wound Armature Motor
* Precisely Meshed Worm Gear & Spur Teeth for Silent Running
* Magnetic Knuckle Couplers
* Prototype Specific Details Including:
-With or Without Dynamic Brakes
-With or Without Drop Steps
-Two Styles of Class Lights
