As a follow up to its successful introduction of the FT, EMD made a few
improvements to the design and offered its 1,350-horsepower F2 which was
essentially an FT in a new body. The F2 was produced for only a few months,
but its new body would become the basis for thousands of F series diesels
to follow. Its successor, the 1,500-horsepower F3 offered customers a boos
in power along with numerous internal changes to improve performance. In
addition, the F3 was touted as a dual-service locomotive that could handle
freight or passenger runs (when equipped with a steam generator). Offered
as A units or as cabless B unit boosters, EMD went on to build over 1800
units between 1945 and 1949 when the F3 was succeeded by the F7.
In service, F3s were assigned to mainline freights and fast passenger runs.
The units were reliable and helped many railroads make the switch from
steam to diesel. The locomotives were also versatile because they could be
used in matched consists or with other locomotives with multiple-unit
connections. They were also long lived, with the last F3s pulled from
regular freight service in the late 1980s and numerous others preserved in
museums.
PROTO 1000 EMD F3 locomotives are perfect for powering trains on your HO
Scale railroad. Dressed in authentic paint schemes, they have all the
performance features you want including all-wheel drive and electrical
pickup, dual machined brass flywheels, directional LED headlight, NMRA DCC
