From the 1920s to the 1960s, many railroads used small containers for
less-carload-lot (lcl) merchandise and bulk materials shipments. Traveling
aboard specially equipped gondolas or flat cars, they were some of the most
unusual and eye-catching loads of the steam-, transition- and diesel-era.
Modeling these early operations is a snap with this complete kit that
includes a nonworking Gantry Crane with Rails, Brick Roadway, Wood Office
Building and Wood Fencing. Perfect for any period layout, it puts a
complete industry in a small area. Since shipments of merchandise were
often time sensitive, there are many possibilities for expanding
operations. And the unique look of the equipment is sure to attract the
attention of visitors. Since early container facilities were often built
near existing team tracks, your new model will look great alongside the
various accessories included with the Team Track (933-3166).
To begin container service on your railroad, Walthers offers both Coke
Containers (933-2120 Series) and LCL Bulk Material Containers (933-2100
Series) as used to move dolomite, lime and powdered cement. Each set
includes three matching containers, painted and lettered for a variety of
railroads, and an undecorated version is available for customizing.
Moving containers over the road will be easy with Walthers 46' USRA Steel
Gondolas (932-7450 Series Single Cars). Based on the United States Railway
Administration 70-ton cars used on several roads, this authentic model is
perfect for steam- or diesel-era operations and can be put to work hauling
all kinds of loads for a variety of industries.
