Great Northern acquired five new Lunch Counter Dormitory cars in 1947 for service on the Empire Builder. Constructed as Plan 7498 in Lot 6718, they were owned, named and numbered as:
GN 1140 Waterton Lake GN 1141 St. Mary Lake GN 1142 Two Medicine Lakes GN 1143 Coeur d'Alene Lake CB&Q 1144 Red Eagle Lake (to GN in 1955)
When the Empire Builder was re-equipped in 1951 the cars were assigned to the Western Star. There, they were joined by a sixth very similar car, GN 1148 Devils Lake, finished by the GN from a P-S shell.
These sides follow the original window layout and include full skirting with etched line details and grab iron holes. The center skirts may be removed to model the cars' later appearance. The HO sides can be applied as overlays on Walthers Empire Builder "Ranch" coffee shop (#932-9034 or 932-9061, both sold separately) and "Lake" dining car (#932-9037 or 932-9079, both sold separately) bodies. The sides can also be used with the Basic Body Kit (#173-101, sold separately).
