The Super Chief of the mid-1950s was truly in a class by itself. A veritable five-star hotel on wheels, less than half the assigned equipment actually generated revenue; although a Railway Post Office or baggage-mail car helped pay the bills, first class tickets were required and riders also paid an extra $7.50 fare. Every amenity was provided, including gourmet meals cooked to order, a private dining room, comfortable lounges, and luxurious sleeping rooms. Maintaining its blistering schedules meant small consists, usually less than 12 cars, transforming the train into a cozy refuge for the elite of Hollywood and Wall Street alike. The mid-1950s saw interesting changes, including the addition of guides entertaining riders with history and lore as the eastbound train sped through New Mexico, and transcontinental sleeper service eliminated changing trains at Chicago. The only major change to the assigned equipment came in 1956, when the Vista series cars were rebuilt with blunt ends and diaphragms. These same cars would later serve the San Francisco Chief.

Offering travelers unequaled luxury and convenience the Super Chief is ready for departure once more, in a new release of models based on the great streamliner as it first appeared in 1956. Its many features include:

Super Chief Consists
With an unequaled reputation for speed and luxury, the Super Chief of the 1950s was in a class by itself. Daily service required six complete train sets, and in 1954, additional sleepers were added for transcontinental service between New York City, Washington D.C. and Chicago. The only significant change came in 1956 when the Vista series cars were rebuilt with blunt ends and diaphragms for mid-train service, eliminating time-consuming switching and turning at the end of each run. With matching WalthersProto 300-Class F7s in classic Warbonnet® colors, it’s easy to build an authentic replica for operation or display. Here are some typical consists to help you get started.
