American railroads committed all their resources to mobilizing troops
during World War II. Passenger car fleets were stretched to the limit, yet
more soldiers had to be moved. Pullman-Standard and American Car & Foundry
rose to the challenge with special troop cars. Essentially reinforced box
cars modified for passenger service, troop cars carried 29 soldiers plus a
Pullman porter in three-high bunks that folded into seats during the
daytime. Most of these unique cars were later sold to the railroads as
surplus and were rebuilt as express box cars, maintenance equipment and
cabooses.
Walthers Troop Sleepers feature interiors, Allied Full-Cushion Trucks,
metal wheelsets, working diaphragms, flush-fitting windows and molded
starter points for installing the supplied wire grab irons. Matching Troop
Kitchen Cars (932-4180 series) are available separately.
