American railroads committed all their resources to mobilizing troops
during World War II. Passenger car fleets were stretched to the limit, yet
more soldiers had to be moved. Pullman-Standard and American Car & Foundry
rose to the challenge with special troop cars. In addition to sleepers,
Troop Kitchen Cars fitted with a coal-fired range and food preparation area
were built to feed soldiers on the move. After the war, most of these
unique cars were later sold to the railroads as surplus and were rebuilt as
express box cars, maintenance equipment and cabooses.
Walthers Troop Kitchens feature interiors, Allied Full-Cushion Trucks,
metal wheelsets, working diaphragms, flush-fitting windows and molded
starter points for installing the supplied wire grab irons. Matching Troop
Sleeper Cars (932-4150 series) are available separately.
