Introduced in the 1960s as workhorse cars for coal and aggregate service,
these cars became standards on railroads across the country. By the 1970s,
as new clean air standards were mandated, coal-fired power
plants around the country found themselves in need of clean-burning, low
sulfur coal. The vast deposits in the western United States met this
criteria and demand skyrocketed. New rail lines were built to serve the
coalfields and railroads scrambled to provide enough cars to haul the
newfound traffic. relying on proven designs, orders for these 100-ton cars
poured in.
Walthers Classic Kits bring back the fun and economy of kit building. Cars
feature detailed plastic bodies, authentic paint and lettering and come
equipped with free-rolling trucks and working knuckle couplers.
