By 1950 railroads were buying diesels as fast as EMD could build them, and customer demand for more powerful units carried over into the switcher market as well. Coaxing more from its proven 567B prime mover, EMD, was able to offer its new SW9 with 1200 horsepower in early 1951. Over 800 of these little workhorses were produced for railroads and industrial customers. Many lead long lives and are still serving shortline and industrial roads long after "retirement" by the original owners.
