Ideal Cars for Long 1960s and Later Ore Trains
These specialized cars were built especially for the ore docks of
Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and were taller and narrower than those found
in Minnesota. But as easily mined deposits of high-grade iron ore played
out in the 1950s, the industry shifted to production of taconite pellets.
Lighter than natural ores, more could be carried per car. Many older cars
were then rebuilt for taconite loading with short side and end extensions
to increase carrying capacity.
Run in solid trains from mines to ore docks, these models come in 12-packs
with different car numbers to make building a fleet fast and easy. Features
include RP-25 metal wheels, multiple car numbers, correct 5' wheelbase
trucks, Proto MAX(TM) all-metal knuckle couplers on end cars and fixed
knuckle couplers on intermediate cars.
