Product Information

This Broadway Limited HO Scale 4-6-6-4 Challenger steam locomotive is based on the huge articulated mallets used by UP to move tonnage across its mainline over Sherman Hill from Ogden to Wasatch, Utah. Challengers were capable of moving huge trains yet their larger drivers allowed them to sprint with passenger trains as well. Over the years these workhorses received modifications and some received oil tenders, smoke lifters and other appliances. Some operated into the late 1950s and today several can be seen in museums and other displays and one operable example, No. 3985 is held for future excursion service. Notably, the Clinchfield also operated nearly identical Challengers in coal service and in the early 2000s UP 3985 was temporarily decorated as a Clinchfield engine and operated on several runs on former CRR lines.

This 4-6-6-4 Challenger features full Paragon3 sound and DCC for realistic sound and motor control. The Paragon3 sound system works with all Broadway Limited Rolling Thunder(TM) advanced sound systems. Other features of this steam locomotive include a heavy die cast chassis, smooth-running flywheel-equipped drive, directional lighting, synchronized smoke and magnetic knuckle couplers. This HO Scale 4-6-6-4 Challenger locomotive can be operated on all DCC systems as well as on standard DC railroads (with limited sound functionality). This model has wheels profiled to operate on Code 70 and larger rail and curves of 18" radius or larger are recommended. The 4-6-6-4 Challenger comes with roadnumber and era-appropriate details, smoke lifters, coal or oil tender and other details as appropriate.
