Reefers are based on the 40' wooden, end bunker, ice-cooled refrigerator cars built in 1928 by ACF for the NWX (Northwestern Refrigerator Line Company) 7000 -7999 series. Thousands of reefers similar to these were built during the 20's and 30's and used as rolling "Billboards" during the most colorful era of American Railroading. In July 1934 the ICC outlawed the painting of billboards as an illegal rebate to the leassee. After that, the leassee name could be no taller than 12".
