56' Thrall All-Door Boxcar - Single Car (Ready to Run) -- Canfor Ltd.

Product Information

Lumber has always been difficult to ship by rail. Box cars provide protection but are hard to load and unload. Flat cars eliminate those problems, but loads have to be tarped to protect them from the weather.

In 1967, Thrall created the All-Door Box Car. Equipped with four large doors, this provided a 25' 7.5m opening for easy handling, while loads remained completely enclosed in transit.

Our ready-to-run cars are packed with detail and painted for a variety of private owners. Free-rolling trucks and working knuckle couplers are standard equipment.

Lumber has always been one of the most difficult loads to carry by rail. Box cars were typically used to provide protection from the weather. But small doors and large loads made loading and unloading an expensive, time-consuming chore. Flat cars eliminated the loading problem, but loads had to be tarped to protect them.

In 1967, Thrall took the best of both ideas and created a unique car that would solve these problems. The All-Door Box Car had no true sidewalls, but was equipped with four large doors which could be opened in pairs. This provided a 25' wide opening that made loading and unloading a breeze! And since it was a box car, the loads were completely enclosed for the entire trip. As the housing boom began in the 1970s, the cars became a common sight at lumber mills and yards across America.

A great car for period freights, they can still be seen in service today. These ready-to-run cars are packed with detail and are painted for a variety of private owners. Plus, three different numbers are available for each scheme, in your choice of an individual car, or a two-pack. Free-rolling trucks and working knuckle couplers are included.

On your layout, they're perfect for modeling bridge traffic. Or, spot them for loading at the Planning Mill & Shed 933-3059, then deliver the load to Walton & Sons Lumber Co., 933-3057 or Mills Bros. Lumber (933-3082) for loads-in/empties-out operation. (See the Cornerstone Series listing in the Structures section for more information on these buildings.)
