In the first few years after Amtrak took over, former railroad-owned dome cars began emerging in the new carrier's corporate colors. With their elevated rooflines and wrap-over windows, these cars were passenger favorites. Replicas of former GN Empire Builder cars are based on cars acquired by Amtrak at its startup.
