First delivered in 1942, CA-3 class cabooses were the first steel-type caboose to enter the Union Pacific fleet. They were the only class with a distinctive running board on the cupola roof, and they also came equipped with grab irons placed vertically along the cupola ends. Close to 200 CA-3 cabooses were built for the Union Pacific in the 1940s, all painted in standard freight car red early in their career.
