Product Information

The prototype for this N Scale Stealth Series Pennsylvania Railroad Class T1 4-4-4-4 from Broadway Limited may look and sound like an articulated steam locomotive, but it really was a rigid frame locomotive with a second pair of cylinders dividing the drivers, making it a duplex drive locomotive. The design was a successful one and after a trial of two locomotives, the PRR ordered 50 more. This model represents the production locomotives, as they appeared in service. This duplex design with lighter machinery, shorter cylinder stroke, less wear and tear due to small moving parts and the use of poppet valves allowed the T1's to travel at extremely fast speeds. Unfortunately they were also prone to wheel slip and maintenance issues that the Pennsy struggled to work through - especially the fact that the poppet valves could not withstand sustained operation at 100 mph speeds. These problems likely could have been resolved with some modest design changes, but the PRR, and steam in general, ran out of time. In 1948, the PRR dieselized all of its first-class prime trains and the T1s were downgraded to haul secondary trains. Some were withdrawn from service in 1949, and all were retired by 1952.

This Stealth Series no-sound/DCC-ready model operates on DC out of the box, or a modeler can easily install their DCC decoder of choice. Out of the box, front and rear lights are directional, and other lights are always ON with track power. Additionally some lighting functions may be missing depending on selected aftermarket decoder the modeler installs. This model includes an NEXT18 18-pin decoder socket so you can add your favorite DCC or sound decoder when you're ready. It also features a built-in speaker so you won't have to add one later. Other features include a heavy die cast chassis and select roadname-specific details. Its wheels are profiled to operate on Code 55 and larger rail and curves of 9-3/4" radius but larger curves are recommended. The Class T1 4-4-4-4 is one of many Broadway Limited N Scale locomotives.
