Though outwardly similar to the T-64 (Also available as kit #185-2109.), the T-72 Main Battle tank incorporated a number of design changes that made it a more formidable machine. The 125mm cannon was an entirely new design and equipped with an auto loader to increase the rate of fire. Entering service with the Soviet army in 1973, export models were also sold to a number of other countries in the region. Sources estimate up to 500 were used by Iraq during the Gulf War. Many of the tanks sold to foreign countries are still in service, although many of the original systems have upgraded and/or replaced with newer technology.
