Joining the Marine arsenal in 1983, these versatile machines are the latest in a long line of self-propelled landing craft (or more properly, Landing Vehicles, Tracked - LVTs for short). The AAVP71A is an armored assault amphibious full tracked vehicle designed to carry troops from ship to shore and continue inland if need be. During operations, these units will spearhead beach assaults to secure landing zones for additional forces. Once that's accomplished, the units can be used as lightly armored support vehicles for escorting convoys, mechanized patrols or control of key checkpoints and roads. With its carrying capacity of 10,000 pounds, the units can be used as cargo carriers, refueling units or pressed into service as ambulances. Operated by a crew of three, the AAVP71A can carry up to 21 fully equipped combat troops at speeds up to 45MPH on land or 8.2MPH in the water. Normal armament consists of an M2 .50 caliber machine gun and an MK-19 grenade launcher.
