Product Information

Starting in 1895, the Pennsy built an electrified network that served many major cities. These routes handled a huge volume of traffic, including premier passenger runs. Problems meeting schedules and handling heavy trains led Pennsy to test a New Haven EP3 electric with a 2-C-C-2 (4-6-0+0-6-4) in 1933. Two experimental engines were ordered, and designer Raymond Lowey created dramatic, streamlined bodies with a centered cab for increased crew safety. This also permitted bi-directional running eliminating time spent turning engines after each trip. Further testing gave the green light to the GG1 and a railroad legend was born. Built from 1934 to 1943, the 139 GG1s racked up impressive mileage in passenger and freight service. In fact, they proved to be such great locos that they outlived their original owner and went on to serve Amtrak and NJ Transit before the last was retired in 1983.

These superb replicas are a perfect complement to any collection of Pennsy power. Each features a diecast body that captures all the lines of the original, numerous add-on details, full cab interior, working headlights and working pantographs with overhead electrical pickup. Under the body, dual five-pole can motors with flywheels provide plenty of pulling power. The Quantum sound system captures all the unique sounds of the prototype including the traction motor fans and electric air pumps. During their careers, the engines wore many different color schemes, which are faithfully reproduced.
