85' Budd Dome Coach

First entering service in the late 1940s, dome coaches quickly became a favorite with travelers, and many served well into the Amtrak era. Inspired by a ride in the cab of a brand-new F unit diesel, the innovative design put passengers above the train for the first time for an unequaled view of the passing scenery. The lower level seated 36 in comfortable reclining seats designed especially for day or night travel, while the dome took coach service to a new level, with seating for 24 in divan-style couches. Especially popular with western railroads, many ran two or more in their important trains, and to take full advantage of the domes, some were actually scheduled to pass through the most scenic parts of the line in daytime!
