Demand for tank cars skyrocketed in the 1920s as automobiles and trucks became more common. Moving gasoline, lubricants and other petroleum products over long distances required larger and stronger tank cars. In 1921, American Car & Foundry rolled out the first of its new 8,000-gallon, riveted steel cars, which came to be known as the Type 21. Shortly after the US entered World War II, German U-boat attacks on coastal shipping threatened supplies of home heating oil and gasoline to the eastern states. To counter the threat, type 21s were put to work as rolling pipelines, moving badly needed petroleum products cross-country by rail. Tough and durable, the cars kept rolling into the 1960s, often hauling many other kinds of liquids.

This series of models are based on steam-era cars and feature the original K-type brake system and early lettering schemes. Designed for easy construction, the kits are prepainted and lettered, and come complete with RP-25 metal wheels, knuckle couplers and more. Additional roadnumbers for each scheme are available in assembled versions (920-54400 series) sold separately.
