In the 1950s, Southern Pacific's busy Bay Area commuter lines needed a new look and modern equipment. The fleet of 1920s Harriman-era coaches was wearing out, so SP turned to Pullman-Standard for new bilevel commuter cars. These models feature the window arrangement that was unique to the SP cars.
