As part of fleet upgrades in the 1950s, New York's Interboro Rapid Transit (IRT) purchased R17 cars in the 1950s to replace its aging pre-WWII equipment. Some 4000 cars in this class were built by the St. Louis Car Co. The last R17 was removed from service in 1988.
