Animated Lights, 100-Car Freights, and Boss Hogg

There’s no telling where a model railroader will find the next idea for his or her creation. It could be a memory of railfanning a long-gone fallen flag, finding a stretch of abandoned, weed-covered track in the woods, or laughing aloud at a favorite TV show. Whatever the inspiration, creativity abounds in this week’s featured scenes.

Coal Country Crossing
A railfan steps out of his truck to wave at the passing freight in this scene modeled by Rob Hale. Automobiles with tailfins parked in town and a black-and-yellow Virginian diesel barreling along the main, firmly set this HO scale railroad in 1950s Appalachian coal country. |
A Lonely Line
It’s been a long time since a train brushed by the branches of this old tree. The lonely line is on its way to being reclaimed by the forest. Click on the white arrows to enjoy the surprising amount of detail packed into this mini-diorama created by @mountaingoatmodels.

Let There Be Light
This enginehouse is a hub of activity (and there’s some snappy music too!). Poster @flo.rh_85 recently shared this standout structure on our Facebook page. It features interior lighting that mimics the flickering of florescent lights turning on.

100-Car Roll By
There’s nothing like standing trackside while a mainline freight rolls by, especially if the train is led by a trio of classic EMD F units. Poster @ho_trains_on_the_floor masterfully re-created this experience in miniature on his Pennsylvania RR-themed layout.

Name That TV Show!
Boss Hogg and Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane lay in wait along a backroad somewhere in Hazzard County in this scene celebrating a certain classic television show. Follow @southern.pacific.lines.n.scale to see more outstanding modeling.
