Rustbelt Memories, Green Mountain Railroads and a Supersized Train Shed

Some of our favorite scenes recreate the experience of railfanning a busy mainline in miniature. We’re featuring two videos this week that do an excellent job of capturing the sights and sounds of standing trackside. You’ll also find other outstanding examples of weathering, painting, and scenery building that are sure to inspire you to take on a new project.

Rustbelt Memories
With the Ford plant in the background, the grungy tower, and a pair of Penn Central Geeps working the yard, this scene captures the flavor of railroading in America’s industrial heartland. Follow @huronsouthdetroit to see more of this detailed HO scale railroad.
Railroading in the Green Mountain State
It’s amazing how much depth a backdrop can add to a model railroad scene. Poster @vna_sub_nscale used backdrops to recreate the rolling New England Landscape of his 1 x 8-foot Vermont – North Albany Sub switching layout.
Shop Time
There’s no shortage of customers for this busy auto repair shop. Poster @diecastemporium detailed this HO structure inside and out. Click on the white arrows to see more views of this scene.
Supersized Train Shed
The Orlando Society of Model Railroaders is an Orlando, Fla., based club with an HO layout that features 10 scale miles of mainline. One of the club’s recent projects is this train station scene centered around three Walthers Cornerstone Train Shed kits. Click on the arrows to enjoy more of the club’s work.
The New Guy
This freshly painted diesel is as bright as the sunrise but not for long. We’ll see what the engine looks like after a few long tricks working the cement plant. Poster @cbqshelflayout already has plans to weather this recent addition to his fleet.
