Extra-large freight cars and switching fun

Whether your favorite part of the hobby is building models, running trains, or a little bit of both, we’ve got you covered with this week’s selection of featured model railroading projects. Get inspired to add something new to your own layout by clicking on the links below and following our social media pages.

Super-size me
Burlington Northern SD40 no. 7309 leads a special train of the widest, tallest, and longest equipment on the Rainier Great Western Ry., including a clearance flatcar, Skybox car for airliner components, a loaded centerbeam flatcar and an enclosed auto carrier. The train sure looks cool, but it also serves to test the layout’s trackwork and scenery placement to make sure this extra-large rolling stock doesn’t take out a tree or structure. Follow @rgwrail to see more videos and photos of this mountain railroad.
Modern Coal Country
Whether featuring classic steamers pulling two-bay hoppers or today’s modern diesels hauling high-capacity “bathtub” gondolas, Appalachian coal country remains a popular setting for a model railroad. A perfect example of modern-era coal railroading is this scene on James Brassill’s HO layout where a General Electric ES44AC pulls a cut of gondolas under the loader somewhere along the CSX main.
Working the Flats
For those that like to keep busy during an operating session, running a local freight is a favorite job. Known as “The Flats,” this switching district on the layout built by poster @modelrailroader56 sure looks like a lot of fun!
HO Scale Urban Planning
This small town on Jason Minier’s HO railroad is really starting to take shape. In addition to installing trees, roads, and scenery, Jason built several Walthers Cornerstone kits, including a Modern Water Tower, Merchant’s Row II, and a couple Cape Cod Houses. He also built a Life-Like Hampden Fire Engine House to serve his town’s volunteer fire department.
Patched and Tagged
For many modelers a fresh-out-of-the-box model is a blank canvas. On this HO scale 4780 covered hopper, poster @modelrrtips used weathering effects, custom graffiti, and patched-out reporting marks to make this freight car stand out.
