A Humble Crummy
It doesn’t matter if you call it a brain box, waycar, hack or crummy, it all means “caboose” in railroad lingo. Like the words used to describe it, cabooses could vary widely from railroad to railroad, especially since they were often “home-built,” sometimes out of retired freight or passenger cars. Poster @youth_in_model_railroading shared this photo of a veteran work caboose bringing up the markers on an HO scale logging layout. |
Waiting for the train
Great modelers often have the subtle eye of a fine artist, as exemplified in this micro-diorama created by Mountain Goat Models. With details like working lights, unique figures, and even crumpled up trash along the rails, this scene captures the mood of waiting at an urban station. Hay Now!
Livestock was once big business on the railroads, especially back in the steam era. Poster @ironroadmodels custom detailed this New York Central stock car inside and out, including some four-legged passengers. Click the link to watch a highlight video of the project.

MOW kit-bash
Railroaders working in the Maintenance-of-Way department often have to think out-of-the-box to get the job done, which can sometimes involve modifying equipment to better suit their needs. Likewise, modeler Luis May followed this real-world example as he kitbashed an M.O.W. truck (right) from two SceneMaster vehicles, including a 3-Axle Flatbed like that shown on the left.
