A Hippo in the Wild
The massive boiler of the Pennsylvania RR Class I1s 2-10-0 earned it the nickname “Hippo” from railroad men. Here, a hardworking Hippo pushes a string of hoppers through the yard on Stan Carlson’s HO scale layout. |
Changing times
The 1950s weren’t just a steam-to-diesel transition era, other parts of the railroad were changing as well. These were among the last years when one could find wood boxcars in regular service. Marc Pitanza added some excellent weathering effects to the diesel switcher and veteran outside braced boxcar in this classic scene.
