Nickel Plate Diesels, Grungy Gondolas, and More Super Scenes

Lots of inspiring projects are on display this week from both first-time layout builders and veteran modelers. Click on the links below to see this week’s featured scenes. Don’t forget to share images from your own model railroad on our social media pages.

Follow the Nickel Plate Road
A classic black-and-yellow Nickel Plate Road SD9 leads a freight along the northern section of the Lehigh Valley in this scene along the Lehigh & Keystone Valley museum layout. Follow @lkvmrrm to see highlights of the club’s HO scale railroad.
Great Gondola
It’s amazing how an application of weathering powder, paint washes, and other techniques can make a stock model look like a veteran piece of equipment that’s seen years of service. Walter Sobchakk realistically weathered this WalthersMainline RailGon gondola and added patched reporting marks and conspicuity stripes.
So Far, So Good
Poster @kenc476 just installed the first bridge on his layout. Even with bare plaster rockwork surrounding it, the scene should prove a dramatic showpiece. We look forward to seeing it fully scenicked.
A lonely line
Track is a model too, as exemplified in this scene from Mountain Goat Models. Weeds sprouting between slightly askew ties and rusty rail help capture the look of a lightly traveled backwoods line. Click on the arrows to check out more views of the scene.
And They’re Off!
Two modern-era thoroughbreds race around the bend somewhere in the Alleghenies. Poster @ns_csx_mytownmodeler found inspiration in the modern-era mainlines of Pennsylvania when he began building this 6 x 10-foot HO railroad.
