Trackside scenes and wonderful weathering

Even on large, basement filling railroads, it’s often the little things that really capture our attention and spark our imaginations. This week’s featured projects, including detailed scenes, dioramas, and models, really illustrate that point. Click on the links below to see more of the exceptional work being done by your fellow model railroaders, and be sure to share your own favorite projects and scenes on our social media pages.

Somewhere on the SP
Pony Horton did a great job capturing the wide-open feel of western railroading in this HO scale diorama that’s also an entry for this year’s National Model Railroad Build-Off contest. The scene is called OS Hiland and it’s centered around a train order station housed in an old caboose along the Southern Pacific RR through Cajon Pass.
Back to the Mines
Coal traffic has been an integral part of railroading since its beginnings. Poster @buffalolinemodeler has realistically re-created coal hauling in the modern-era with this scene, as the crew bus waits to take the next shift of workers to the mine.
Trackside on the
New Haven
A pair of classic Electro-Motive Division “Geeps” switches scrap metal gondolas in this video from John Miller. You can see more of his exceptional layout, set in New England during the 1950s, by following @newhaven1959.
The Art of Grime
Weathering is an aspect of our hobby that many modelers enjoy. It also takes a true artist to transform painted plastic so that it really looks like dirty, rusty metal. These two SD9s, expertly weathered by poster @rfshops6, are true testaments to that artistry.
Miniature Masterpiece
You don’t need a ton of space to get into model building or model railroading. Check out this scratchbuilt wooden culvert diorama from Mountain Goat Models. This detail-packed scene fits into a 2" x 2" space.
